History of Beekman Place Livery

In 1839, this building housed a fire station.  Soon after, it became the carriage house for the Beekman family, who were merchants on Silver Street in the famed Under-the-Hill section of Natchez.  Little Rosie Beekman, the young daughter of the merchant, became one of Natchez' few fatalities of the Civil War when she was struck by shrapnel from the bombardment of the town by a Union gunboat.  Father and family were climbing Silver Street in a retreat to safety when young Rosie exclaimed, "Father, I've been kilt!"

Owner John Grady Burns is a native of Natchez and a floral and wedding designer of national renown.  He is the author of two books, Personally Yours and Evergreen - Decorating with Colours of the Season.  You can see examples of John Grady's designs and more about his book at these links:
Personally Yours Flowers
Evergreen - Decorating with Colours of the Season celebrates the spirit of the holiday season.  Co-written with Jill Helmer and Kathy Stewart with photography by Bartram Nason.
